Nozzle and z platform height

The topic title might be a little confusing, but I was wondering if the Z platform can sit below the level of the top plate?

Basically, I ordered slightly longer (495mm) smooth rods after I had already cut and assembled the large copper tube which connects wheel to arm according to instructions. Now I’m feeling too lazy to cut the hardened rods or disassemble everything.

Naturally, this raises the platform a bit making the tip of the hotend dip beneath the the top plate.

Will this cause issues with homing? Is there a chance I could crash the hotend into the top plate if the z home is too low?

Thanks. I need to look into the homing of the arm. Does it home like other printers (corner of the print bed)? Feel like I saw a video where it was homing to the rear of the top plate…

That clears it up. I’ll just run out to the store and buy a couple lengths of copper pipe so that the hotend stays above the top plate. Thanks for the information!

You might get away with just replacing the 22mm (ish) copper pipe, and turning on some extra nuts at the end of the inner shaft.

I would think the Z axis hall sensor would stop you from doing this. You should be able to adjust the height accordingly of the sensor so this doesn’t happen.

Morgan homes to a position to the side of the build plate where the arms do not reach during normal printing. Default homing position is over the top platform to the right.

You could try to aim for a position just off the top plate…

The reason why it needs to be a position outside the printable area, is that homing from an area beyond the end-stops would make the arms keep on turning until it runs out of belt. Not good…
