Morgan Build in Dortmund/Germany – Some Questions

Hello an greetings from Germany to all Morgan-builders !

1st of all – THANKS Mr. Harley for your impressive Idea of your Printer!
I was fascinated from the the first view of it.

At the moment i have printed some parts, one wheel is completed, all Tube-Caps and the z-mount-bottom (very tight on a prusa to print 😉 ) also.

Now i want to saw out the Plate .. I found the DXF-File in the repository … excellent but …
how to print out 1:1 ? I want to print out this drawing with the “Poster”-Option of my Printer but all tries (e.g. with Freecad, to PDF … ) the Printer want to print the whole on A4…
some ideas ?

2nd Question: is there anybody who build his own Hotend? May i can get a drawing of that ?
I have the possibility to use a (manual) lathe an a CNC milling maschine …
If nobody build one, which cheap Hotend you recommended ?

3rd Question: i was a little bit confused about the z_mount 8/12mm.
If i get you right Mr. Harley, it is anyway if i go the 8 or 12mm-Way?
12mm is just more stable ?

Any German Morgan-builders?

Hi Whisky,

I am also building a Morgan and I am located in southwest of germany.
Building is a little bit different because I do not like the ‘legs’ where the upper platform is build on. I build a alu cube around the whole thing with small alu ( 0.75 mm ) profile. The mechanical building is ready and I am now connecting the electronic for the first dry run.

Regarding the hotends, I am very fond of the J-heads. I have quite a couple, all powered with cheap resistors, and no problems of any kind yet.

Do make sure you use some thermal paste in them (I do, and it may be part of my good hotend luck) and make sure the thermistor is mounted securely with poliamide tape (kapton or similar). I see pictures of melted hotends much too often…

my try with export as jgp and print with Postrazor failed – the print is only width 300mm (400mm should be) .. but i feel, i’am on the right way.
i will report.

@Q: U bought the J-heads ? Or made by yourself ?
i search for a good engineering drawing of a J-head – dificult to find …

for the thermal paste, i took the hint to use exaust sealant like “Holts Gun Gum”.

The thermal paste i refer to is the white stuff usually applied to transistors and heat-sinks to make sure the heat from the transistor is transferred optimally.

Rather use the kapton tape to hold everything together. It is light, and neat, and you can easily remove and redo the tape if it ever becomes messy.

i solve the problem of printout the dxf 1:1 …
*install “inkscape”
*file/open the dxf-file

a windows occured “dxf reading” (or similar – i’ve everything in german)

*disable “automatic scale to a4”
*Scalefactor 1.0
*now draw a select-frame around the hole drawing
change size of page via File/Document settings to A2

now the drawing is right-sized placed on the a2-page

*now draw a select-frame around the hole drawing again
change the colors of lines (if you choose the drawing with the glove you can change the color below of the drawing)

+down left corner click shape – at the right side a Menu open – filling an shape … goto color of shape, on the filed RGBA enter “000000ff” (black)

* goto file/print
*select the printer an go to settings
*click on “extended” or maybe “poster-option
printout with the poster or “big pages on pages divided pages” (dont know the real name of the Option, i’ve a german Windows here)
*if the printer wnts to print an overlay -disable …

for my first Question (how to get 1:1 printout), i think i’ve got an answer …
open in LibreCAD, Export as jpg, set Export-Resolution to 1200 an then i open the jpg with Postrazor
(http://posterazor.sourceforge.net – if you choose zip, its just a exe without installation)
and create a PDF with it … i modified the DXF with a X and Y median line to get more orientation on stick together … will test it tomorrow and report…

Thanks for the nice 1:1 printing tip. I took mine to a printing house to have it printed on A2 paper… And of course I had some platforms lasercut out of 3mm Al plate as well.

Hotends are tricky, and a field of research all on its own. I used a good reliable hotend on purpose, and will only dabble in that area when I bought myself a high quality lathe, and my Lilian concept have matured.

There are a couple of German builders on the forums already. Great to have some “made in Germany” Morgans as well!
