So my new Morgan build has started. The first hurdle to get over was getting the 3d parts needed for the Morgan.
After trying for a while, we eventually decided to modify an old CNC machine we had laying around to print the plastic parts. This was a project in itself, but has proved very useful as it gave us a test platform for the electronics.
I am now about half way through the plastic parts needed and hopefully by the end of the week, I will have all of them and the actual build can begin.
I must say – I am really impressed with the quality of the parts we are getting from the modified CNC machine – Once we got the calibration out the way – We now have auto bed leveling working on it also and it is working really well.
I have had some trouble finding the 32mm PVC pipe, so after some experience with trying to keep the temperature in the room constant during our prints on the cnc, I have decided that I will build the Morgan in a box instead of on the PVC pipes – The idea behind this is to eliminate the need to find the PVC pipe and also to give me the ability to close the printer while its printing. Especially now during winter!
Will keep updating with progress as we get further… -

I spent the day cutting the dxf files on the cnc and now i see the holes for the z mount top and z mount bottom don’t line up with the holes on the platform or base.


Are there new dxf files for the base and platform to accommodate the printed z mount brackets? -

KeymasterThe holes in the platforms are for the 8mm brackets. For 12mm the rods mount directly into the platforms. The holes next to the rodholes can be used to secure the rods.

ParticipantSo – A quick update on the progress. After struggling with the extruder jamming, I eventually figured out that the filament was extremely tight in the hotend. After some research and eventually stripping the hotend down I figured out that the brass nut in the back of the hotend had been put in way to tight and it was squashing the PTFE tubing in the hotend. This was restricting the movment of the filament through the hotend. With this finally fixed I got impatient and had to print something – it printed – its ugly, but it printed :). I now have a lot of calibrating to get done to get it to where it should be. And I need to figure out how to get the auto bed leveling working as I am using Yogi’s firmware, so manual leveling is out as he removed it from the firmware.
I have printed a small servo arm on the other printer, so will see if I can get that mounted somewhere for the auto leveling. Also need to get the calibration finetuned on the extruder and also on the X and Y steps. So the next print will be the Morgan calibration print.

I am battling to get the machine calibrated now. Perhaps you can point me in the right direction?
If you have a look at the calibration print below – the x axis is making a very narrow fill and putting the outline away from the fill. Even putting the dimensions in the spreadsheet and taking the new values doesn’t fix this. I can’t seem to find the issue. Have you come across this before?
Just for reference. The pic is taken with the bottom of the piece facing up (so it’s upside down)

KeymasterYes, I have. When the two sides of the X arm of the print do not line up, it means that the machine has slop, either on the belts or some place else.
Look for hysteresis, and fix it up.

ParticipantSo – after stripping and re-assembling the shafts making sure everything was true and modifying the belt clips slightly so that I can put a small cable tie around the end where the belt comes through to make sure there will be no slipping, I finally have a printer that is working :).

I am super pleased and can now go about the final calibration on the spreadsheet and then fine tuning the extruder feed and retract settings.
